Self respect means valuing yourself enough to make good choices, take responsibility for your actions, and continue growing even when no one is watching. It is having the confidence to know your worth while also having the humility to recognize there is always room to improve.

One of our Dojo Kun principles is Seek Perfection of Character. That does not mean we expect anyone to be perfect. Perfection is not the goal. The goal is continual improvement. Every student, regardless of rank, has strengths to build on and weaknesses to work through. Having self respect means being honest with yourself about both.

When we acknowledge where we need to improve, we give ourselves the opportunity to grow. Whether it is showing more respect, improving our attitude, practicing more consistently, or developing better karate skills, every small step forward matters. At Union Karate Club, we believe the students who continue to improve are not the ones who think they have it all figured out. They are the ones who are willing to learn, accept correction, and keep striving to become a better version of themselves every day.
