At Union Karate Club, one of the principles of our Dojo Kun is “Seek Perfection of Character.” This does not mean being perfect. No one is perfect. It means always trying to become a little better than we were yesterday.
In Karate Training
Seeking perfection of character means:
- Giving your best effort in every class.
- Listening when your instructor is teaching.
- Practicing even when something is difficult.
- Accepting corrections with a positive attitude.
- Never giving up when you make mistakes.
Every black belt was once a beginner who made mistakes and kept working.
At Home
Seeking perfection of character means:
- Being honest, even when it is hard.
- Treating others with respect.
- Using good manners.
- Helping others when you can.
- Taking responsibility for your actions.
Character is what you do when no one is watching.
Remember
Karate is not just about punches, kicks, and belts. It is about becoming the best version of yourself.
Every day ask yourself:
- Was I respectful?
- Did I give my best effort?
- Did I make good choices?
- Am I a little better today than I was yesterday?
If the answer is yes, then you are seeking perfection of character.
This Month’s Challenge:
Choose one area where you can improve (at karate or at home) and work on it every day. Small improvements made consistently lead to big results.
Dojo Kun:
Seek Perfection of Character
Respect Others
Endeavor to Excel
Be Faithful
Refrain from Violent Behavior
Remember: The goal is not to be perfect. The goal is to keep improving.
